The Exorcism that Got Cancelled

family 003

I'm not kidding, when Kyle was born, we were worried that by age three, we would have to perform an exorcism on him just to get him to smile. He would NEVER smile as a baby, even in the hospital as his happy mom, dad, sister and big brother all ooed and aahed over him and made those silly faces at him, trying to get him to giggle. He never would. We thought our baby was either broken - - or possessed. Kenneth even admitted that he was a *wee* bit afraid of him, even a little intimidated by this little 7 pounder who would not let us into his little world by giving us so much as a cute...little...grin. Nothing. At all. Ever. This went on for about the first six to eight months of Kyle's new life with his family. There were times when we thought we heard him cooing and turned quickly to catch him in the act. How silly of us! When we turned to look, it was only to discover that he was merely grunting to let us know he was either 1. hungry or 2. dirty. That was about all of the social interaction he'd do with any of us. The rest of the time he'd just scowl at us like we were really annoying him just by being in his face and in his world. Weird People Star Trek: First Contact trailer Of course, I immediately blamed Kenneth and his side of the family for being so weird and for putting this genetic weirdness on our  baby. After all, this strange behavior had to be coming from his side of the family, of course. And anyway, anyone who knows Kenneth, knows that he's the serious type. It takes a LOT for him to crack a grin or show a tooth. Very rarely does he do it even now, even after I've known and been with him for over twenty years! So, I deduced that our brand spanking new baby boy got his serious, dry face from his dad. The scowl, the blank stare, the serious look - - they were all attributes that I had seen in Kenneth for years. Wasn't new to me. So what does his family have to do with this? Nothing really...I just felt like calling them weird! Kenneth nick-named him "Mugsy" like the Baby Face Finster cartoon character from Bugs Bunny. Remember him? He was the man in a baby's body, wearing a diaper, mustache, smoking a cigar and shaving. Yep, it was about like that with Kyle, minus the cigar. Everything he did was "big" or "old" for him. I think he thought (and still does) that he's much older than he really was and he acted like it too, with all the seriousness and cold staring. All I really wanted him to do was to be my baby, especially since he was the caboose. I wanted to baby-fy him as much as I could and make him my sweet pumpkin. After about three years, we all gave up and just resorted to living with Mugsy and accepting him for who and what he really was. A serious little fellow. As a matter of fact, we'd call him Mugsy, and he would respond, scowl and all with the grimace and the furrowed brow look. Scary stuff. Until one day... Prayer... You see, this is why Christians will tell you to pray and to pray HARD over your children, from the minute they come into the world. Yes, prayer works wonders and wonders it brought us. We didn't do any hard, sweating praying for Kyle. We just prayed that he wouldn't kill us in our sleep or grow up and rob banks, that's all. Just simple stuff that we asked God to do for us. Kyle eventually did begin to loosen and show some personality and even signs of friendliness. Although to this day, it's a toss-up whether or not he'll actually interact or be nice to one of us, but we'll take what we can get, you know? So, at Sunday's dinner yesterday while we were all getting ready to eat, a strange and blessed thing happened. Our Kyle, who we have always kept an eye on and been leary of asked if he could lead the prayer in blessing the food. Yes! Kyle, who we really thought had never even spoken to Jesus let alone actually asking Him to invoke blessings onto our bountiful spread. We all looked at each other in disbelief and nodded in agreement that he could lead the blessing. We all held our breath. He began. After the prayer, we all erupted in clapping and cheering telling Kyle what a wonderful job he had done in praying. Of course, he was beaming, but we were wiping sweat from our foreheads thanking God that he hadn't said anything that Kenneth or I would have to later explain in prayer about what he really meant. Yes, now our Kyle is five years old and a sweet little fellow who is an absolute joy to be around. And actually, I'm seeing the benefits of keeping him in church, talking to him constantly and showing him the right way to do things. And it doesn't hurt that we keep that big bottle of Olive Oil on his nightstand that we have to occasionally douse on him while he's asleep.
